Why Google Maps matters
When people search for a service 'near me' or in a town, Google often shows a map with a few businesses at the top. Those businesses get many of the calls, direction requests and website visits. Your Google Business Profile is what puts you on that map, and it's free.
Step 1: Create or claim your profile
Go to Google Business Profile and search for your business name. If it already exists, claim it. If not, create it using your exact business name. Don't add extra keywords to the name, as that can get a profile suspended.
Step 2: Choose the right category
Your primary category is one of the most important settings. Pick the one that best describes your main service, then add secondary categories for other services you offer.
Step 3: Set your address or service area
If customers visit you, add your address. If you travel to customers, you can hide your address and list the areas you serve instead. Google still needs an address to verify the business.
Step 4: Verify
Google will ask you to verify that you're a real business, often by video, phone or postcard. Follow the steps carefully. Your profile won't show fully until it's verified.
Step 5: Fill in everything
- Phone number and website
- Opening hours, including holiday hours
- Services with short descriptions
- At least 10 real photos of your work, team and premises
- A clear business description in plain English
Step 6: Keep it active
Post updates, offers and photos regularly, answer questions, and reply to every review. Active, complete profiles tend to perform better than ones that are set up and forgotten.
Step 7: Get real reviews
Ask happy customers for honest Google reviews and make it easy with a direct link. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them, because that breaks Google's rules.
Step 8: Make your details match everywhere
Your business name, phone number and website should be the same on your website, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook and other listings. Consistency helps search engines and AI assistants trust your information.
Quick answers
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps?
Once verified, your profile can appear quickly, but ranking higher in the map results usually takes steady work over weeks and months.
Do I need a physical address?
Google needs an address to verify you, but service-area businesses can hide it and show only the areas they serve.
